The Department of Civil Engineering has been in existence since the inception of BLDEA's Vachana Pitamaha Dr.P.G.Halakatti College of Engineering and Technology, Bijapur in 1980 and has grown to a full fledged department. The department offers Graduate, B.E (Civil) & Post graduate course, M.Tech (Structures). The department has eleven dedicated staff members, who are actively involved in teaching, consultancy and applied research. Three of the faculties are doctorates and four are pursuing their Ph.D.
The Department has eight well equipped laboratories. The concrete and highway material testing laboratory and Environmental Engineering laboratory have received recognition from South Central Railway and Karnataka rural water supply & sanitation agency respectively. Hydraulics, Surveying, Structural Engineering and Environmental Engineering Laboratories have received grants from AICTE under MODROB program. The department has many latest types of soft-ware which are used for student projects & research work.The department has a very good library with sufficient number of reference books, text books & journals. The department library has received grants of Rs.1 lakh under National Program on Earth-quake Engineering Education (NPEEE) in October 2004.
It is a matter of pride that this department also has a VTU recognized research centre. It got a research grant of Rs.13.37 lakhs during the last academic year. Various activities like faculty development programs, seminars, workshops & guest lectures are conducted regularly by the department to promote involvement of staff & students in research. The department was duly accredited by NBA for three years.
The success rate of university exams is excellent, with 100% passing in final year.The department placement record is very good with 100% placing in the year 2007-08. Various companies like L & T, Shobha developers, Brigade Group, Davis Langdon & Seah Consulting India Pvt.Ltd. etc have recruited students from civil engineering department. The department has produced engineers par excellence who, with their knowledge and skill, have been able to contribute to the sustained development of civil engineering and allied fields. Many of the alumni of civil engineering department are well placed in India & abroad.
The consultancy work done by the department is highly remunerative, generating good revenue to the college every year. Some of the important works carried out the department include third party inspection for flood relief works, water quality analysis for some districts of Karnataka under Rajiv Gandhi drinking water mission, Soil investigations, Survey, Construction material testing etc. Some of the important clients are Zilla Panchayat, Taluka Panchayat, Land army, Water supply board & many private parties.
